Dreams Are Not Achieved By Dreaming

Do not get me wrong. Dreaming about your future is good. All college students should have someplace they are trying to go, something they are trying to achieve. However, students should also understand that dreams are not achieved by dreaming. Success is rarely achieved by chance.

When students apply the wrong approaches, they are setting themselves up for failure. They frequently choose a direction or approach that is ineffective because it is comfortable and safe. The most successful students, adults and employees try things, even when they are a little bit scared. Risk taking is part of life. If your dream is worth it, taking a few calculated and reasonable risks will likely be necessary.

The college years are filled with opportunity. They are one of the best parts of your life. Pay attention. When students do not see, hear and take advantage of the opportunities that surround them in college, they may have to wait a long time for another opportunity that is as important or as great. That is the wrong kind of risk to take.

Time for a Modern Era Format Change For Scientific Research Papers - No More Multi-Columns

Well, we all have pet peeves when it comes to our education, and if you are someone who is out of school, and no longer attends a college or university, perhaps you've committed yourself to a lifetime of learning, as I have. No longer do I have to worry about boring lectures, socialist indoctrination, or outrageous textbook costs, but there are still some things that bother me. One of my pet peeves today is to look up a research paper which is written in a format that has two or three columns. Why you ask?

You see, if you try to do this on a modern computer device you have to increase the font size to read it, and then you have to read paragraph by paragraph, when you get to the bottom of the page you have to scroll back up to the top again. This gets really hard if you're reading from a PDF file with three columns, in fact it's so aggravating, that you find yourself skimming all columns at once to find what you are looking for, rather than actually reading, which gets very difficult when the research paper goes into new mathematical equations that you've never seen before, and you have to keep reverting to the top to recall what all those symbols mean.

While many adults, attendants, and other authorities may express how important a college or university's rank is, you must remember that this is not the "be all, end all". Just because a school is ranked in the top 10 does not mean it is the best school for you, and it most certainly doesn't mean it has a program that will interest you or suit your intended career path.

Getting Into Harvard

Harvard's history is well known. Named after wealthy English benefactor John Harvard, the institute was established in 1636. John Harvard's memorial was not restricted to just Harvard's campus though, infact the city of Cambridge is named so after his own schooling at the famous English university. Harvard didn't strive to just emulate, but to surpass the world's most revered universities.

Many foreign visitors mistakenly believe Harvard is based in Boston, but that's not quite true. Boston is but short journey away and is in itself a strong draw for students. Boston is famous for its sporting franchises, the base of the American revolution, the Tea Party movement and of course, that bar where everybody knows you name... Cheers.

Here's a sobering thought. For the class of 2016, just 6% of applicants who applied to Harvard earned acceptance.
