Somerset House Represents Much History and Royalty

As a property long held by the royal family Somerset House is filled with history as well as much pomp and circumstance as almost any other home or mansion in the UK. Tracing back to 1539 when Edward Seymour, the Earl of Hertford purchased land outside of Temple Bar in London that was known as "Chester Place" and then some ten years later cleared the land of old buildings such as the Inn of Chancery in preparation of erecting an imposing residence he would then call Somerset once he became the Duke of Somerset. The new house, built two stories high, surrounded a quadrangle and demonstrating a three story gateway, is considered to be an early example of Renaissance style architecture. The Duke of Somerset never lived long enough to reside in the house of his dreams because he was executed (at Tower Hill) in 1552. His unpopularity and extensive amount of enemies made it impossible for him to survive life in England at the time.

Ghana Life: More About The Slaves' Village

Visiting professors to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, in the 1970s could spend a comfortable life on the campus amid modern surroundings and leave at the end of their contracts without ever being aware of the extreme poverty that existed a few hundred metres away across the Accra Road in the former slaves' village of Ayigya Zongo. A culture shock of substantial proportions awaited anyone compelled by duty or curiosity to roam beyond the lorry park at Ayigya Junction. Yet an even greater shock was felt by one expatriate professor whose effort to help the villagers was vigorously rejected.

From the lorry park ringed by petty traders' kiosks a narrow unpaved road led upwards through a no-man's land of houses with high-walled gardens suggesting an intermediate community intent on preserving maximum security. Only the dirt road with no pavements (sidewalks) and huge pot holes provided a clue to what lay ahead.

Your Words, Actions And Performance All Have Consequences

Young children can sometimes get away with saying or doing the wrong things. They may not yet be expected to know any better. However, as children grow older, they can get into trouble because they either do not recognize or do not care that their words and actions sometimes have severe and painful consequences.

Because college students are a bit older, more is expected of them. They have already experienced some of the positives and negatives that result from their words, actions and performance. By the time students graduate from college they must be prepared to take responsibility for what they say and do and accept the consequences that may come from any missteps. That is part of living and working in the real world. Nobody else can be blamed for the choices you make or for the way you carry out your responsibilities.

Hurtful, harmful and negative words, behaviors and poor performance will usually have negative consequences for you.

Dreams Are Not Achieved By Dreaming

Do not get me wrong. Dreaming about your future is good. All college students should have someplace they are trying to go, something they are trying to achieve. However, students should also understand that dreams are not achieved by dreaming. Success is rarely achieved by chance.

When students apply the wrong approaches, they are setting themselves up for failure. They frequently choose a direction or approach that is ineffective because it is comfortable and safe. The most successful students, adults and employees try things, even when they are a little bit scared. Risk taking is part of life. If your dream is worth it, taking a few calculated and reasonable risks will likely be necessary.

The college years are filled with opportunity. They are one of the best parts of your life. Pay attention. When students do not see, hear and take advantage of the opportunities that surround them in college, they may have to wait a long time for another opportunity that is as important or as great. That is the wrong kind of risk to take.

Time for a Modern Era Format Change For Scientific Research Papers - No More Multi-Columns

Well, we all have pet peeves when it comes to our education, and if you are someone who is out of school, and no longer attends a college or university, perhaps you've committed yourself to a lifetime of learning, as I have. No longer do I have to worry about boring lectures, socialist indoctrination, or outrageous textbook costs, but there are still some things that bother me. One of my pet peeves today is to look up a research paper which is written in a format that has two or three columns. Why you ask?

You see, if you try to do this on a modern computer device you have to increase the font size to read it, and then you have to read paragraph by paragraph, when you get to the bottom of the page you have to scroll back up to the top again. This gets really hard if you're reading from a PDF file with three columns, in fact it's so aggravating, that you find yourself skimming all columns at once to find what you are looking for, rather than actually reading, which gets very difficult when the research paper goes into new mathematical equations that you've never seen before, and you have to keep reverting to the top to recall what all those symbols mean.

Auto Careers - Do You Have What It Takes to Become an Auto Body Collision Estimator?

You would like to become a mechanic, but which kind? Have you given any thought to the type of work that you'll do after graduation? Some automotive schools give students a chance to specialize as auto body collision estimators.

One oft-cited reason for which technicians seek further training from automotive schools to work as an estimator is job stability. The sad fact is that as long as there are cars on the road, there will be car crashes. Furthermore, the number of car crashes is not thought to diminish during a recession. Hence why auto body collision estimator is said to be one of the more stable and recession-proof auto careers.

Students who enroll in auto body collision estimator programs should develop the following skills.

Good observation skills

Choosing the Right College Program

If you are about to graduate high school and have college in your eye as your next big step, it's never too early to start looking at schools and college programs. It may seem like a daunting task to figure out which one will suit you best, but with a few helpful tips you'll be well on your way to getting a degree that interests you and will provide an exciting career for your future.

While many adults, attendants, and other authorities may express how important a college or university's rank is, you must remember that this is not the "be all, end all". Just because a school is ranked in the top 10 does not mean it is the best school for you, and it most certainly doesn't mean it has a program that will interest you or suit your intended career path.

The key to finding the perfect match is making sure you will meet the level of your prospective schools' academic standards.

How to Find a Tax Internship

As a student, you're used to hitting the books, but with more people than ever pursuing higher education you need to show future employers that you understand the practical application of taxes, not just the theories behind them. By interning, you will gain valuable work experience while making professional contacts that could last your entire career.

Finding an Internship:

Obviously, before you can have an internship you have to find one. There are several avenues to pursue.

Check with your career office. Many companies post their available internships on campuses. Make sure you remember to apply early, since it is likely that many other students will also be applying, especially at the end of the school year.

Getting Into Harvard

Harvard's history is well known. Named after wealthy English benefactor John Harvard, the institute was established in 1636. John Harvard's memorial was not restricted to just Harvard's campus though, infact the city of Cambridge is named so after his own schooling at the famous English university. Harvard didn't strive to just emulate, but to surpass the world's most revered universities.

Many foreign visitors mistakenly believe Harvard is based in Boston, but that's not quite true. Boston is but short journey away and is in itself a strong draw for students. Boston is famous for its sporting franchises, the base of the American revolution, the Tea Party movement and of course, that bar where everybody knows you name... Cheers.

Here's a sobering thought. For the class of 2016, just 6% of applicants who applied to Harvard earned acceptance.

Getting Into MIT

Applying to MIT isn't like applying for other universities. MIT is a little bit special. To 'hack' the admission process, you're best served by doing your research and beginning your admissions journey early. Famous alumni who have attended MIT include the architects of the modern world, in business, technology, politics and of course, architecture. Names you may recognize include Kofi Annan and Benjamin Netanyahu. Famous architect I.M. Pei has had a pronounced influence on not only the world, but buildings on MIT's campus.
